In this eight-piece series of handbuilt moon jars, I explore the concept of the body as a vessel for the soul and the function of chains as a tool for both binding and adornment. Inspired by traditional Korean moon jar techniques, Kisu Hwang’s contemporary take on moon jars, and Ruth Borgenicht’s use of ceramic chains, I aimed to create a series that expresses uniqueness, individuality, and imperfection. This idea is pushed further through the unpredictable outcome of pit firing techniques. My hope is to address the stigma surrounding trans bodies through ceramic sutures and by showing the transformation of something that was once restrictive into a means for self expression and authenticity.
