Project
Conceive
Amend
Each vase in this series of ceramic vessels represents a stage of transition using masculine maebyeong and feminine jubyeong forms to convey a narrative of gender exploration and perception.
Conceive acts as a blank canvas. It prompts reflection, imagination, and expression, marking some of the first steps we take towards self discovery. I invite viewers to take a moment to reflect by writing on and folding paper butterflies so that the vase may be filled with stories of change and epiphany.
Project represents a stage of metamorphosis as well as the disparity in how one’s gender may be perceived internally and externally. The double-walled form demonstrates a projection of self as a work in progress. In East Asian cultures, blooming plum blossoms serve as symbols of resilience, renewal, and hope.
Amend critiques the lack of access to gender affirming healthcare and resources through the use of a Korean patchwork method called jogakbo. Jogakbo could be done by anyone, requiring only scraps of fabric. It is a call to action, demanding de-implementation of anti-trans legislation and the de-stigmatization of trans bodies.
